You’re clearly interested in free web hosting – I mean, it’s free, right?  But, then there’s the little issue of “can it do everything that I need it to do?”  By the end of this post, I’ll have you convinced that free web hosting can be used to build your business online.

If you’ve been down the free web hosting path before, you’ve probably seen the uglier side of the coin – noisy banners, not enough bandwidth, no support from the company, and one splitting headache. For you, the old adage “you get what you pay for” probably annoys you more than ever as your big plans for your site vanish into thin air.

Is there any free web hosting out there that can give you what you need?  Well, that depends on what you need.

If you’re Wal-Mart, then I’m guessing this isn’t going to cut it.  However, if you are trying to make a few bucks by marketing a product, by placing some AdSense, or if you just want to blog about your favorite puppy pictures, then using 5GBfree will meet all your requirements.

In fact, here’s what I’m going to do.  In order to show you how easy and practical using free web hosting is, I’m going to set up my own WordPress site using 5GBfree’s service.  In fact, my goal is to never spend a dime during the life of the blog, yet still use it to get targeted traffic and hopefully earn some dough.

Free Web Hosting Set Up

#1. Head on over to 5GBfree’s free web hosting page and click on the big, red “Sign Up Free” button.

#2.  Fill out the info!  Note that the “Username” field will be used in your free domain name.  If your username is Zelda, then your domain will be zelda.5gbfree.com.  I put in “camerons”, so my URL is going to be http://camerons.5gbfree.com.  It might not be the coolest domain for making some extra bucks, but hey, it’s free!  Or, if you’re really concerned about that, you can purchase a cheap domain and set up forwarding.

#3.  Confirm your email.

#4.  Now you’re in CPanel, which helps you with some of the behind the scenes stuff for hosting your website.  It’s also where we’re going to find our WordPress installation.

A little screen is going to pop up and ask “Do you need help getting started?”  Since my objective is to show you how easy this is to set up, I’m doing this on my own or bust.  I’m also a guy, so I’m sure I can figure it out without asking for directions.

#5.  After about 5 seconds of searching, I found the WordPress icon.  Click on that and let it install!

#6.  Log into your wp-admin with the link, username, and password you received in your email, and play around with the settings for a while.  Get creative, and make it reflect the personality you’re looking for.

Summary

I still have some playing around to do with my site, but so far I’ve been very pleased with the results.  My main goal with the site is to target the keyword “internet success” and to drive traffic by ranking on Google.  I’ll probably implement a few other traffic strategies, but that’s the main goal right now.

As far as 5GBfree’s service, it couldn’t be easier or more practical.  There is a little ad at the very bottom of the page, but after I’ve written some posts then visitors will have to scroll a long ways down to even see the banner.  I get 5 GB of storage space and 20 GB of bandwidth to play around with, which seems more than enough for anything I’ll need in the near future.  There’s even a forum that I might go to if I give in and need help.

I’ll keep you updated on how well the blog works using the free web hosting, and I’ll let you know about traffic as well.
