The Pros and Cons of Free Hosting
If you’re like me, you look at advertisements, into windows, or at other people and want the things you see. But those dream bubbles are swiftly popped when you see the price tag. When you come back down to earth, you still want those things and then you set out looking for the best bargain you can find. Sometimes you find just the bargain you were looking for but most of the time, you are sacrificing something in settling for that bargain instead of paying the posted price. What I tend to do in bargain hunting is make a pros/cons list on a piece of paper or my phone, deciding whether the pros of the bargain out way the cons of settling for a bargain. So when you’re looking through the channels of search engines, coming through the different prices of web hosting companies and domain name costs for your website, and you stumble upon a company offering you free hosting, you have to sort out what you’re getting by signing on.
There are many pros and some cons when you use free hosting to power your website, let’s explore some of them.
Pro:
It’s free. The best thing about anything being free is you are always getting more than you pay for, the biggest bang for your buck, the highest profits, and you come out the winner in the transaction. Some companies need larger amounts of computing resources and sophisticated features for their website, so it makes sense for them to shell out the big bucks in yearly, monthly, even daily fees to power their websites. But to run your own private website or blog, those high hosting fees are unnecessary.
5GB Free
gives you much more than you are paying for.
Con
: Length of URL. With some free hosting companies, you receive an embarrassingly long name full of slashes, colons, and letters. If you want people to flock to your blog or smash the amateur website misconception, you know that URL is just as damaging as that awful backpack your mother picked out for you in the second grade. But! It can be a pro if you find a free hosting organization who will give you your own domain name, such as
5GB Free
.
Pro:
Flexibility. With most hosting companies, you have to sign a contract, binding you to their services for a specified period of time even if you’re keeping your end of the bargain (paying them money) and they’re not keeping theirs (providing poor service). To pull out of that contract before the specified date can seriously damage your business and cost you even more money. Should you become dissatisfied with the services free hosting provides you, you are free to leave at any time with tears in our eyes but no questions asked.
Con:
Control and trust. Often times, free hosting companies are
notorious for providing sub par services
and slapping their customers with a long “don’ts” list. How are you supposed to grow if your provider keeps you chained up and feeds you only a slice of bread? Luckily, 5GB Free gets it. Its hosting services are typically reserved for the most professional of websites, but it is now backing a free hosting service. So the trust and control issue is not something to be worried about with 5GB Free.
Pro:
This is the biggest point, but it’s free. You really have nothing to lose but a lot to gain. Give 5GB Free a shot and see for yourself how these cons usually found in other free hosting offers are put to rest.
